Lamesa

The First National Bank of Lamesa

Lamesa is the county seat of Dawson County, about 61 miles south of Lubbock on US 87.

This building is likely The First National Bank of Lamesa. It sits at the address cited for the bank.

The First National Bank of Lamesa was chartered 11163 in March, 1918.

In 2007, it merged with The First United Bank in Dimmitt, TX.

The bank issued 1902 Plain Backs and 1929 Type 1's.

The census cites only two existing notes, a Plain Back and a Type 1.

The Plain Back sold at a Heritage auction in January, 2001, for $8,625.

"A pleasing note with several folds and slight wear that is typical for the assigned grade. The signatures are slightly faded, but the paper retains excellent crispness. This is the only known large size example from this bank, the only issuing institution in town. Only $230 in large size currency was outstanding in 1935 from this bank that was chartered in 1918. This is truly a spectacular opportunity to own an item that is not often available, and may not be available again in the near future. Ex: Irish Collection (Lyn Knight, 8/1997), lot 1484; Fall Auction Sale (CAA, 10/1998), lot 3736.From the Texas Collection."

The Type 1 sold May, 2011, for $6,325.

"This west Texas community is one of the rarest of all Texas towns, having been represented for years by only one piece, a large size $5 which was ensconced in the Irish holdings for decades. That piece was obtained by Steve Ivy for $4345 when the Irish collection was dispersed in 1997, and reappeared on the market four years later when the Ivy collection was sold at auction, this time realizing almost double that figure at $8625. It has not been seen since 2001, and now reposes in a major Texas holding. Not a hint of the existence of a Series 1929 example from this thinly capitalized institution has even been rumored until this piece was discovered three months ago. Fortunately for collectors, it is a barely circulated piece which has been graded Very Fine 30 EPQ by PMG. This was the only bank in Lamesa [There was a second national bank, The State National Bank of Lamesa, charter 12767, but it issued no currency and was succeeded by The Lamesa National Bank on September 29, 1928], and Lamesa was the sole issuing location in remote Dawson County, so the buyer of this note gets to cover a bank, a town and a county. Any estimate here is just a guess, but if grade, rarity and desirability are any guide, bidding is highly likely to reach..."

This note is again for sale at the Long Beach Expo US Currency, September 11-13, 2024, with this set of notes:

"Lamesa, TX - $20 1929 Ty. 1 The First National Bank Ch. # 11163 PMG Very Fine 30 EPQ.
This west Texas community is one of the rarest of all Texas towns, represented by a single large note, which was once part of the J. L. Irish and Steve Ivy collections and last on the market in a 2005 auction, and a single small size example, the note we are pleased to offer this evening. It made its last public appearance in our 2011 Central States auction, and is now available once again for one fortunate collector to enjoy. It is a bright and original $20 with just even wear. This was the only bank in Lamesa, and Lamesa was the sole issuing location in remote Dawson County, so the buyer of this note gets to cover a bank, a town and a county."
