Orange Sulphur

Colias eurytheme

"The male is orange above with solid black borders. A black spot ornaments the forewing cell; a red spot, the hindwing. The wings beneath [see above] are more greenish yellow, the hindwing containing a silver, pink-edged spot, usually with another smaller satellite spot beside it." (John L. Tveten & Gloria Tveten, Butterflies of Houston & Southeast Texas, p. 48)

This butterfly rarely alights with its wings spread showing the black border, which is then visible only during flight.

"Female has either yellow or greenish white (white form) and has yellow spots in the upper wing black margin." (John M. Dole, Walter B. Gerard & John M Nelson, Butterflies of Oklahoma, Kansas & North Texas, p. 32)
