"The hackberry emperor is olive-brown or grayish brown with a complex pattern of dark markings. A series of white spots ornaments the outer portion of the forewing, and the hind wing bears a row of rounded eyespots. A single round, black eyespot marks the outer margin of the forewing above ... the hackberry emperor ... [is] highly variable geographically, and a number of named forms exist across the country ..."
