Needham's Skimmer
Libellula needhami
The Golden-Winged Skimmer "becomes
much less common as it approaches coastal waters, where it is
replaced by Needham's Skimmer."
I believe that I have observed both at this location. The checklist
maps in Abbott's book (pp. 267 & 273) suggest that this is
not impossible.
Although Needham's Skimmer "is largely restricted to the
coastline," I suspect that the dragonfly above may be one.
The abdomen on this one is indeed yellow as is the abdomen of
the one in Abbott's Plate 56e.
Needham's Skimmer is very similar to the Golden-Winged Skimmer,
but "Needham's Skimmer has black veins over most areas of
its wings" (Abbott, p. 267)
Compare these two
