Golden-Winged Skimmer
Libellula auripennis
The Golden-Winged Skimmer and Needham's
Skimmer are very similar in appearance, and Abbott (p. 267) notes,
"These two species were long confused with one another."
I believe the above specimen is
a female Golden-Winged Skimmer.
"The face is brown in young
males and females, becoming bright red in older males. The thorax
is brown with two diffuse pale stripes laterally. The wings have
a yellow pterostigma with
a white coastal vein. The hind tibiae are reddish brown.
The abdomen is yellow with a black middorsal stripe ... The wing
veins are reddish orange throughout." (Abbott, p. 267).
"Note that lower hindleg
is black ..." (Dunkle, p. 129)
This is a male
Golden-Winged Skimmer.

Compare these two
