Snout Butterfly
Libytheana bachmanii
"The snout butterfly can be
confused with no other species. Its labial palpi extend far forward
from the head into a long beaklike snout from which it takes
its name, and its forewings are hooked and abruptly squared off
at the tips. The forewing
above has white spots near the apex and large orange patches
at the base."
The Tvetens (109) note that "Some
authors now place this small group of butterflies in a subfamily
Libytheinae within the larger family Nymphalidae."
The usgs.gov webpage uses the newer classification, and I have
followed their lead.
