"The red-spotted purple, subspecies astyanax, is black above with iridescent blue or blue-green scaling, particularly on the outer portion of the hindwing. Bright orange-red marks cluster near the base of the wings below, and the underside of the hindwing has a submarginal row of orange-red spots."
