"This is one of several 'anglewing' butterflies that share a similar wing shape, with irregular margins and short tail-like projections. Orange above, with dark markings ... The adult question mark is seasonally dimorphic. The summer form, sometimes called 'umbrosa,' has the upper-side of the hindwings largely black. The winter form, which emerges in the fall and hibernates until the following spring, has orange hindwings with dark spots." The one above is the summer form. This is the winter form
