Northern Cloudywing
Thorybes pylades
"Three very similar species
of cloudywings inhabit eastern North America ... The northern
cloudywing ... is the most common and widely distributed. We
find it regularly in the Houston area. T. pylades is dark
chocolate brown above and below, with a series of small triangular,
translucent spots across the forewing."
"Southern Cloudywings have
more extensive and aligned spots than do Northern Cloudywings.
Note especially the 2nd spot from the FW margin. The spot is
prominent and hourglassed shaped in Southern Cloudywings but
is usually a small dot or absent in Northern Cloudywings ...
Northern has a dark brown or dark gray 'face'." (Glassberg,
p. 150.)
