Hayhurst's Scallopwing
Staphylus hayhurstii
The Tvetens do not report this
butterfly near the Houston area, but it is listed (p. 108) in
Butterflies of Oklahoma, Kansas & North Texas by John
M. Dole, Walter B. Gerard & John M. Nelson (2004. Univ. of
Oklahoma Press: Norman, OK). The USGS checklist does not report
it for Houston county.
"Underside is dark brown with
two darker bands across each wing; forewing has a few tiny transparent
dots. Males are darker than females. Hindwing margins are scalloped;
fringe on both wings is checkered black and tan."
This is the male.
