a regular member of Houston's butterfly fauna ... The typical
Texas form ... is black above with small white spots and a wide
orange-yellow band across the wings. The under side mirrors this
contrasting pattern. No other butterfly in our area has similar
markings, although there are related patch species in South and
West Texas."
"In other populations, the
broad transverse band varies
from white to yellow or almost red."
