The Cornell Lab of Ornithology, All About Birds, says "A shorebird of grasslands, not shores, the Upland Sandpiper inhabits native prairie and other open grassy areas in North America."

The Sibley Field Guide to Birds of Eastern North America (p.154), "Uncommon and local on grassy fields where grass is abouit 4 to 8 inches ... high with patches of open ground. Solitary or in small groups ... Note yellow legs, short yellowish bill, and dove-like expression on pale face."

The Sibley Guide to Birds (p.173), "long tail, short bill, and thin neck distinctive."
