Swamp Sparrow
Melospiza georgiana
"[The Swamp Sparrow] winters
in Texas as a migrant from Canada and the Northeast. It occurs
most abundantly along the upper coast and in the eastern third
of the state ... A dark, rust-colored sparrow, it has a reddish
crown that develops a gray central stripe in winter plumage."
(Tveten, p. 359.)
The Sibley Field Guide to Birds
of Eastern North America (p. 384)
notes "rufous crown ... clean gray breast."
