Swainson's Hawk
Buteo swainsoni
This is a photo of the bird on the ground.
Compare the Swainson's
Hawk from the Cornell Ornithological Lab's website.
"Swainson's hawk breeds on
the open grasslands across the western half of North America
and winters mainly on the pampas of South America. Its annual
round-trip migration of up to 17,000 miles makes it one of the
truly long-distance avian commuters. It ranges throughout Texas
duaring these spring anf dall migration flights, but it is most
common in the western half of the state." (John L. Tveten's
The Birds of Texas, p.158)
