Roseate Spoonbill
Platalea ajaja
"Large, long-legged, fairly
long-necked wading bird with a distinctive, flat, spoon-shaped
bill ... Neck and upper back white; rest of plumage pink ....
(Donald & Lillian Stokes, The Stokes Field Guide to the
Birds of North America. p. 138)"
"Roseate Spoonbills are well
known as postbreeding wanderers to inland locations. They are
rare to very rare visitors inland to the eastern third of the
state during the summer and fall (Mark W. Lockwood & Brush
Freeman, The TOS Handbook of Texas Birds, p. 37-38)"
The birds were fleeing the pond,
and this image shows only the size and the distinctive coloring.
They did have spoon-shaped bills.
