Purple Finch
Carpodacus purpureus
The House Finch is very like the
Purple Finch, and their ranges can overlap here.
But because of the rarity of the Purple Finch, I thought that
this was probably not that bird.
House Finches are "Uncommon
to locally common resident throughout most of the state"
(Lockwood & Freeman, p. 217),
Purple Finches are "Uncommon
to rare and irregular winter visitor to the northeastern portion
of the state" (Lockwood & Freeman, p. 216).
But more than one member of the
TX-ORNITHOLOGY listserv has said that it is most likely a Purple
Finch.
It does look purple to me.
This is another view.
