Pileated Woodpecker
Dryocopus pileatus
Tveten (p. 225) writes "Roy
Bedichek in Adventures with a Texas Naturalist, described
his encounter with a pair of pileated woodpeckers along the Neches
River near Lufkin in 1937, When he heard their 'Unearthly clamor,'
Bedichek asked a native what the bird was. "A good
God.," the fellow replied, with the emphasis on the 'good.'
'You see, people ain't usta seein' a woodpecker as big as a crow;
so when they do see one, they jes' natchally say, 'Good God!'"
I think it's bigger than a crow.
