Northern Shrike
Lanius excubitor
"Uncommon to rare ... Perches
on high exposed branch or wire when foraging for sdmall birds
or rodents. Very similar to Loggerhead Shrike, but larger, nore
narrower dark mask with white markings around eye ... large bill
with obvious hook." (David Allen Sibley's The Sibley
Field Guide to Birds of Eastern North America. P. 272)
"Rare to very rare winter
resident in the Panhandle and casual on the South Plains. Northern
Shrikes are casual to accidental visitors on the Rolling Plains
away from the Panhandle, as well as in many other areas of the
state" (Mark W. Lockwood & Brush Freeman's The TOS
Handbook of Texas Birds. P. 132.)
All the above makes a Northern
Shrike at this location problematical, but observe this comparison.
Even with the hooked beak on this bird, the comments from Sibley
and Lockwood & Freeman suggest that the identification be
tentative.
I have not yet counted it among
the attested birds.
