"Females are brown above and
heavily streaked below; immatures resemble females, but with
cinammon breasts. All, however, have slender bodies, long wings
and tails, and the white
rumps easily visible in flight" (The Birds of Texas,
p. 153)
I originally identified this as
a Merlin, but the pattern on its wings also differs from the
Merlin and there is the difference
in the white patch on the rump.
