Northern Flicker
Colaptes auratus
"The flicker is a large, foot-long
brown woodpecker with a black barred back, round black spots
on the breast, and a black bib on the chest." Northern flickers
have three "forms": yellow-shafted, red-shafted, and
gilded .... "... [The] male yellow-shafted has black mustaches
and a red crescent on the back of the head. Ever ladylike, females of all forms lack
the mustaches of their mates."
These birds were present from November
through March.
