Lark Sparrow
Chondestes grammacus
"Uncommon in open grassy areas
with scattered trees or short grass adjacent to hedgerows and
trees ... Striking head pattern, clean whitish underparts with
dark spot on breast ...." (Sibley, The Sibley Field Guide
to Birds of Eastern North Americs, p. 377)
"They are rare and very local
in summer in the Pineywoods." (Lockwood & Freeman, The
Texas Ornithological Society Handbook of Texas Birds, p.
195.)
Lark Sparrows appeared once before
in July, 2010. This pair,
has been in an area 100 yards in radius for the past three weeks
(April - May, 2012).
The Lark
Sparrows were still there in the middle of June, 2012. They
may have nested. They have persisted
now to the end of September 2012, when I saw a flock of 10±
birds.
