Barred Owl

Strix varia

"Almost everyone who has ventured out into the East Texas countryside at night has heard the deep, resonant call of the 'eight-hooter': Hoohoo-hoohoo, hoohoo-hoohooaw ... About 21 inches long, it has a large round head without the feather tuft 'horns' of the great horned owl, and its huge limpid eyes are dark brown; the lower breast and belly are streaked lengthwise."
