State National Bank of Marshall
Cashier
Willis Maxwell Thomas
(May 28, 1890 - November 17, 1973)
In the 1920 census, W. M. Thomas
is living with his father-in-law, David C. Driskell
future President of the State National Bank of Marshall.
Neither is firmly committed to
banking at this time. Driskell is a lumberman, and Willis is
a bank teller. We do not know which bank. In 1920, the national
banks are The First National Bank & The Marshall National
Bank. The State National Bank will only appear in 1925. Willis
will eventually become the Cashier of that bank, replacing Richard
J. Miller who dies in 1930.
By 1930, Thomas is Assistant Cashier.
R. J. Miller is still Cashier.
By 1940, Willis has moved to the
top of the order. The first Cashier, Richard Jonnes Miller, had
died in 1930, allowing Thomas to sign the Type 2 notes as Cashier,
and Driskell apparently retired to return to lumbering, but after the last of the national
bank notes were issued.
William Maxwell Thomas is ultimately
identified as an automobile
salesman (or perhaps, like R. R. Robb, the Cashier in Groveton,
he owned a dealership. It is not clear.)
