The Merchants and Farmers National
Bank of Carthage
"R. E. Trabue proudly put
his name atop the building that, then as now, provided the largest
commercial space on the square. A crowd of men seems to be attracted
by the 'low prices' advertised by Trabue, while the man in the
white shirt in the foreground apprarently is dealing in horseflesh.

saloon (Courtesy PCHS)" (Bill O'Neal. 2009. Carthage.
Mount Pleasant, NC: Arcadia Publishing. P. 63)
The bank would be the building to the right of
the saloon.
As is commonly the case, there is much more life on the street
100 years ago than there is now.
