Repair to the mountain on highway
20.
Sometimes the mountain required
repair as well as the road. During the winter, snow and ice works
its way into the crevices. It expands them, breaking off pieces
of rock and weakening the rockface making it hazardous. In the
spring, road crews would drill into the rock face (as in this
picture), plant a charge of dynamite, and blow away the dangerous
parts.
Of course, this means more waiting
... but at least you get to see an explosion.
Disposal was easy. Just push it
over the edge. I would judge the road here to be a single lane,
and the slope is about as bad as it gets. I have never seen it
more than vertical.
Sometimes cars go over the
edge.
